Public Self-Focus and Sex Differences in Behavioral Self-Handicapping: Does Increasing Self-Threat Still Make it "Just a Man’s Game?"

The pres ent study exam ined the effects of pub lic self-focus and par tic i pants’ sex on self-hand i cap ping behav ior. Research in the area of self-hand i cap ping has con sis tently shown that men alone tend to self-hand i cap behaviorally. Because con di tions of pub lic self-focus tend to make the evaluative impli ca tions of per for mance more salient, the authors hypoth e sized that peo ple would self-hand i cap more when they are self-focused (as opposed to other-focused). Men and women were pre sented with an impor tant intel lec tual eval u a tion and were allowed to prac tice for the upcom ing test as much as they wanted. Results showed that men self-hand i cap more when they are self-focused but women do not behaviorally self-hand i cap under selfor other-focused con di tions. Heightened con cern over pos si ble fail ure in self-focused con di tions appeared to be the crit i cal medi a tor in encour ag ing self-hand i cap ping behav ior among men.
